Borg tops IBSF championship group

Mellieha player Alex Borg made sure of finishing first in Group F of the IBSF World Championship after a 4-2 win over Englishman Martin Gould in Cairo yesterday. Borg had breaks of 89, 72 and 77 on the way to his eighth victory from nine matches so far.

Borg had breaks of 89, 72 and 77 on the way to his eighth victory from nine matches so far. Today, he plays his last group qualifier against South African Francois Ellis who is out of contention.

The other Maltese player in the championship, Simon Zammit, yesterday practically kissed his chances goodbye after losing to Tim English 4-2. The Welshman is still unbeaten after nine matches.

Zammit plays his last match today against China's Fung Wai but the prospects look bleak for the Malta champion to join Borg in the last 32.

Zammit has lost five from nine matches in Group E.
