The Building Construction Industry Department within the Works Division, Maltacom and the Reggie Miller Foundation have won the first occupational health and safety awards in their respective categories.

The awards were presented on Wednesday evening by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Social Policy Lawrence Gonzi, Dr Simone Borg and Dr Mark Gauci, chairman and CEO of the Occupational Health and Safety Authority respectively.

The chairman of the adjudicating panel, Stuart Bullock, stressed that being awarded an OHS Good Practice Award did not denote that a workplace was risk-free or in line with all OHS legal requirements.

He outlined the criteria on which the awards were given as originality, the cost-benefit aspect, effective added value, whether the initiative went beyond the legal requirements as well as the sustainability of the initiative taken.

Over 30 nominations were received from various companies, government departments and private individuals.

During the same ceremony, Dr Gauci launched the 2002-2003 Awards, the theme of which will be preventing risks from dangerous substances.

A new award will be presented next year to an individual who the Occupational Health and Safety Authority feels would have distinguished himself or herself in promoting occupational health and safety. The individual will be identified by the authority and to this end, no nominations or applications will be accepted in this regard.

Maltacom attained the Health and Safety Management award for the various initiatives taken, including the publication of a ring-bound handbook available in Maltese and English.

The Reggie Miller Foundation was awarded the SME initiative for organising a series of courses on occupational health and safety ranging from safety awareness and security in the office to first aid and leadership.

The Building and Construction Industry Initiative award went to the Building Construction Industry Department for their initiatives including a policy statement, risk assessments and action plans.
