Opposition leader Alfred Sant told a meeting of self-employed persons from Zebbug and Siggiewi yesterday that EU membership would expose them to unfair competition from Europeans.

The Labour Party, he said, believed that the Maltese government should retain the right to control the number of foreign self-employed people who came to Malta.

Dr Sant also argued that the partnership which the MLP was proposing with the EU would give Maltese firms the same total access to the EU export market as EU membership, but Maltese firms would not be saddled with the increased costs which accession would bring about.
