In the third quarter this year, the total quantity of agricultural produce sold through organised markets increased by 1.5 million kilogrammes, or 12.3 per cent, to 13.5 million kilogrammes over the same quarter last year, the National Statistics Office said yesterday.

There was an increase of 4.7 per cent in the wholesale value of fresh fruit and vegetables, from Lm2.1 million to Lm2.2 million.

The quantity of fresh vegetables passing through organised markets increased by 13.1 per cent while the wholesale value of fresh vegetables registered an increase of 5.8 per cent when compared to the same quarter of 2001.

The quantity of fresh fruit passing through organised markets increased marginally by 0.7 per cent while the wholesale value of fresh fruit declined marginally by 0.3 per cent.

In the first nine months, the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables passing through organised markets increased by 5.7 per cent, from 32.3 million kilogrammes to 34.1 million kilogrammes, when compared to the same period last year.

The wholesale value of fresh fruit and vegetables also registered an increase of 11 per cent or Lm0.6 million, from Lm5.6 million to Lm6.2 million, when compared to the first nine months of 2001.
