Ninety-one immigrants were yesterday taken before the Magistrates' Court in Gozo and charged with breaching immigration laws to which all pleaded guilty.

The immigrants comprised 61 Egyptian men, six Iraqi men and two women, two Eritrean men and a woman, 14 Pakistani men, four Somali men and an Ethiopian man.

They were charged with arriving in Malta on Tuesday without leave from the immigration authorities. They also admitted not having money to fund their stay.

The immigrants were given a one-month jail term suspended for six months and a deportation order was issued against them, executable only after a decision on refugee status is given to those who apply.

Police Inspector Maurice Curmi prosecuted.
