Pope John Paul II has appointed Mgr Charles Scicluna as Promoter of Justice in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Curia said yesterday.

Mgr Scicluna was born in Lija in 1959 and was ordained in 1986.

He was initially Defender of the Bond at the Maltese Ecclesiastical Tribunal and lecturer in Canon Law at the University of Malta.

In September 1995, Mgr Scicluna started giving service to the Apostolic Signatura, the highest tribunal of the Catholic Church.

In September 1996, Mgr Scicluna was nominated by the Holy Father as Associate Promoter of Justice at the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura.

In December 1996, he was also named Prelate Ad Honorem to Pope John Paul II.
