Malta's commitment to the principles of the Aarhus Convention were highlighted by the Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry for Home Affairs and the Environment, George Pullicino on Sunday, when he addressed the first meeting of the parties of the Aarhus Convention in Lucca, Italy.

Hailed as a milestone in environmental democracy, the Aarhus Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-Making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters is a convention prepared by the Economic Commission for Europe and constitutes a remarkable step ahead in international environmental law.

Malta signed the Aarhus Convention in December 1998, and ratified it in April of this year.

The amendments to the Development Planning Act in 2001 and the Access to Information Regulations that were brought into force in March 2002 transformed the Aarhus convention into Maltese legislation.
