Malta was steering towards a solid maritime policy that would serve as an indicator of the professionalism with which Malta served the shipping industry, Transport Minister Censu Galea said yesterday.

Mr Galea was speaking at the opening session of the EC Maritime Law Course at the International Maritime Law Institute, University of Malta.

The formulation of a Maritime Transport Action Plan by Malta would not only serve to harmonise local maritime law and practice with the provisions of the EU transport acquis; but would automatically endorse crucial elements of IMO international legislation that were on the government's ratification agenda.

Malta intended to live up to its commitment to establish a body of maritime legislation and practice, the minister said.
