A man was yesterday jailed for two weeks for failing to pay his estranged wife alimony for their child.

Charles Gauci was found guilty, on appeal, of failing to pay alimony to his estranged wife Alexandra in the months before September 2001.

He had originally been acquitted by the Magistrates' Court but Mr Justice Joseph Galea Debono, in the Court of Criminal Appeal, found that the money was due.

He ruled in favour of a jail term after noting the appeal court's recurrent recommendations to Gauci to abide by the order handed down by the Second Hall of the Civil Court.

Dr Lorraine Schembri Orland was counsel to Mrs Gauci.
