A VAT sitting yesterday yielded just under Lm26,000 in fines on a company and 10 people for failing to abide by a court order to submit their tax returns against a penalty of Lm6 a day.

Magistrate Saviour Demicoli computed the fines for the people who failed to abide by the court order months after it was handed down.

George Stevens, of Sliema, was fined Lm2,742; Mario Fenech, of Marbeaux Holdings Limited, Hamrun, was fined Lm2,034 and Lm2,916, for two separate returns; Anthony Bartolo, of Qormi, Lm1,464; Dr Adrian Delia, of Birkirkara, Lm816;

Colin Portelli, of St Paul's Bay, Lm2,352; Francis Chetcuti, Clouds Catering Company Limited, Lm3,036; Anthony Camilleri, il-Bajzo, of St Paul's Bay, Lm3,036;

Cornelius Mulvaney of Ta' Xbiex, Lm1,662; Joseph Borg, of Siggiewi, Lm3,036; and Carmel Aquilina, of House of Knights, Zurrieq, Lm2,892.

The assistant director of the VAT department legal section, James Farrugia, led the prosecution.
