Councils earn Lm2.2m from law enforcement

Local councils had revenue of Lm1.7 million in the year up to March 31 and a further Lm581,323 since from law enforcement, figures given in parliament yesterday show.

The local council of St Pul's Bay topped the list, receiving Lm181,129 last year and a further Lm65,925 since April. It was followed by Valletta council, which received Lm132,680 in the year up to March and Lm7,536 since April. Sliema council received Lm128,647 up to March and Lm47,000 since April, closely followed by St Julian's council.

In contrast, tiny Kercem received a total of Lm90 and San Lawrenz, Lm105.

Birzebbuga, Floriana, Marsa and Xghajra had no local wardens.

The information was given by Justice and Local Government Minister Austin Gatt in reply to a question by Mr Joseph Cuschieri (MLP).
