Following the setting up of a committee to take all necessary action on the Qala Creek project, Qala has decided to hold a referendum on the project, after a call by residents to this effect.

The development of a five-star hotel and marina on the site of a disused quarry in Qala is being proposed by Gozo Prestige Holidays. The project, which will take about four years to be completed, includes a five-star hotel, a destination port and yacht marina.

The committee is chaired by mayor Paul Buttigieg and includes Horace Mercieca as deputy chairman, deputy mayor Victor Grech as secretary, and representatives of various Qala associations - Mario Portelli, Joe Mizzi, Alessio Mizzi, Patricia Mercieca, Joe Mifsud, Miriam Mercieca, Josette Buttigieg, Peter Bajada and the archpriest Canon Carmelo Refalo.

Mr Buttigieg said that he and the council received threatening letters after expressing their disapproval of the project.

He added that following the referendum the council and the action committee may also organise a national petition.

Voting in the referendum will take place at Qala primary school from November 15 to 17.
