MLP attacks Electoral Commission

The Labour Party's delegate for the Electoral Commission Michael Falzon has accused the commission of not doing anything to avoid abuses in the electoral process.

In a letter, Dr Falzon also called on the commission to immediately launch an extensive publicity campaign in the media to explain the requirements that must be met to be entitled to vote.

Dr Falzon said the call was being made in the light of concern expressed by the Electoral Commission in February, 1999, over the impact of the abolition of embarkation cards on the accuracy of the electoral register.

Dr Falzon reminded the commission of its constitutional obligation to ensure a just and clean electoral process and to maintain a correct register.

But, he said, this was not being done because there were many inaccuracies, particularly as a result of the elimination in March, 1999, of records of Maltese going abroad.

Dr Falzon said no alternative system was introduced to resolve this problem.
