I refer to the centre page article of September 27 about the proposed fireworks factory in the limits of Gharb. As stated in the article, our society has given full backing to the Gharb council against such a project in the area. Indeed, no insurance cover could ever compensate for the loss of the San Dimitri chapel should an explosion occur in its vicinity.

We however expect the mayor of Gharb to show the same preoccupation in the matter of another part of our historic patrimony in the village, which is also in imminent danger of obliteration.

Readers have already been made aware of the recently discovered underground cave in what was up to a few months ago Triq is-Sdieri, Gharb (August 8, 2001 and September 15, 2002).

Unless urgent remedial action is taken by the council, the remaining part of its concave ceiling will collapse.

The rain water which is continuously seeping through is only making matters worse.

Immediate action towards the preservation of both sites is therefore solicited.
