The Pope has appointed the Maltese auxiliary Bishop of Londrina in Brazil, Mgr Vincent Costa, as bishop of Umuarama.

Located in the southern Brazilian state of Parana with a population of 360,000, Umuarama has 265,000 Catholics, 66 priests and 86 religious.

Mgr Costa, from Birkirkara, first went to Brazil in 1969. He was ordained priest in Malta in 1972.
