Restoration of the tower at Mgarr ix-Xini in Gozo will take longer than planned because the tower has been vandalised, the Ministry for Gozo said.
The ministry strongly condemned the damage done saying the restoration project had reached the final phase but some of the finished work had now to be redone.
One of four coastal towers on Gozo, the Mgarr ix-Xini tower was built in 1661 by Grand Master de Redin to guard the island's south east coast. There are nine coastal towers in Malta and another on Comino.
The tower is being restored by the Projects Development Department of the Ministry for Gozo in collaboration with the heritage society Wirt Ghawdex.
