IMLI, set up by the International Maritime Organisation, a specialised UN agency for the postgraduate training of lawyers in international maritime law, which is housed at the University fo Malta, is holding a special course on European Community Maritime Law.
The course offers an overview of the maritime dimension of EU policy, as reflected in the various rules and legislation covering shipping, fisheries, coastal zone management and marine environmental protection. The focus is placed, however, on shipping.
The course - which should be of interest to maritime lawyers, shipping executives, government officials, diplomats and law students - delves into the intricate EU rules on maritime competition, ship safety and environmental protection. Recent "post-Erika" developments in the field of maritime safety and pollution prevention and liability are canvassed in the context of the role of the EU and its member states within the IMO. A general introduction to the EU institutional framework and external policy is also provided.
