Opposition home affairs spokesman Gavin Gulia has criticised the government over the recent promotion of Superintendents Godfrey Scicluna and Manwel Cassar to assistant police commissioners, observing that more senior officers had been passed over.

He said the two promotions were made "by direct order" by the government and now a call for application had been issued to fill the remaining vacancies, which was further humiliation to the officers concerned.

Dr Gulia said the manner of promotion of those two officers mirrored the case of an inspector who was passed over two years ago, leading the Ombudsman to report that the promotions process lacked transparency.
