The Archbishop, Mgr Joseph Mercieca, is taking part in the plenary assembly of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences being held in Sarajevo between today and Sunday.

During the first part of the assembly, the bishops will discuss evangelisation and the Catholic Church, evangelisation and ecumenism, and evangelisation and Islam.

Reports will be presented on the Convention of Catholics in Central Europe, the European Bishops' Symposium on Youth in Europe, which was held in Rome last April, catechism and pastoral work in universities, pastoral work and migration, pastoral work and the means of social communication and the safeguarding of creation.

The second part of the assembly will discuss the future of Europe. The bishops are expected to tackle several sectors including the European Convention, EU enlargement, dialogue between the Church members and politics, paedophilia and the situation in the south east of Europe.

A communiqué on the conference says that the bishops will continue to reflect on the Church's participation and the Church's contribution in the European unification process and the convention's work.

The bishops will give special consideration to the prospects of candidate countries. The communiqué says that the theme "life" - from embryos to euthanasia - will be given particular attention.

The third and final part of the assembly would deal with the future work of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences.
