A 70-year old man was in a critical condition yesterday after a fire broke out at his residence in Freres Street, Sliema, the police said.

The police were alerted about the fire by an anonymous telephone call. Looking through the letter-box slit in the door of the residence, the police noticed a man lying on the floor crying out in pain.

The police broke the door down and the man was rushed to hospital. Members of the Civil Protection Department put out the fire which had damaged furniture.

Duty magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna appointed experts to help in an inquiry.
