Part-time airport security guards employed by J.F. Security staged a one-hour strike on Saturday afternoon on the instructions of the GWU to press for better conditions of work.
The union said, however, that further industrial action had been put off since a meeting with the company is due to be held today, when Malta Employers' Association president Joseph Farrugia will attend.
The union complained that the employment of the security guards was split among four companies having the same directors. Each company used the security guards for less than 20 hours a week and they received their pay in four separate cheques.
This was being done so that none of the companies used the guards for 20 hours per week, which would entitle them to vacation leave, sick leave and other benefits.
The union said the workers worked an average of 56 hours per week and were paid Lm1.25 per hour.
