The Kingfisher Sport Fishing Association, which is organising a 48-hour fishing marathon over this weekend, has so far raised Lm2,500 in aid of the Ir-Razzett tal-Hbiberija in Marsascala.
Association president Stephen Johnston said this was the seventh consecutive year that the association was holding a fishing marathon in aid of charity.
The marathon, being held along the Strand in Sliema, was officially opened by Infrastructure Minister Francis Zammit Dimech on Friday at 6 p.m. It will come to an end tonight at 11 p.m.
Mr Johnston said that this year 44 of its members had come forward to take part in the marathon and they had been split into 11 groups of four.
As in all activities organised by the association, the fish caught during the marathon will be released back into their natural habitat at three-hour intervals after being weighed.
The association this year chose to support Ir-Razzett tal-Hbiberija which has recently embarked on a project to set up multi-sensory rooms for therapeutic use by disabled persons. The project is expected to cost around Lm100,000.
The public is invited to present any donations during the marathon or send the donations directly to Ir-Razzett tal-Hbiberija.
Donations may also be made by telephone on the following numbers: 5004 9091 for a donation of Lm1.05; 5004 9093 for a donation of Lm3.05 and 5004 9095 for a donation of Lm5.05.
To add to the atmosphere along the Strand, a varied programme of on-stage entertainment was put together and last night Corkskrew, Helen Micallef and Leontine did their bit in aid of charity.
Meanwhile, the marathon is expected to end with an entertaining spectacle tonight and Ira Losco, Debbie Scerri, Paula and Olivia Lewis are among those who have been roped in to end the evening on a high note.
