Palermo Mayor Dr Diego Cammarata and his council are to sign a twinning agreement with Victoria council.
During a Victoria council meeting held recently, councillor Dr Anton Tabone said that Malta's honorary consul in Palermo, Dott. Alfredo Barbaro was in contact with President Guido de Marco regarding the agreement.
Mr Saviour Grech and Notary Paul Pisani were proposed to form part of a sub-committee to take care of the details of the agreement.
Dr Neil Falzon, of Euris Consult Ltd, pointed out that Victoria council has much to gain from European Union programmes through the twinning agreement and other EU programmes.
Labour councillor Joe Debrincat said he was in favour of twinning agreements. "Such initiatives teach young people what other towns have to offer, from a touristic, cultural and sports perspective," he said.
During the meeting it was suggested that representatives of two Victoria band clubs form part of the sub-committee to promote Victoria's culture in Palermo. Dr Tabone also suggested that a Victoria Week be organised in Palermo and vice-versa.
Speaking at the meeting, mayor Paul Cassar pointed out that efforts may be made to discuss the restoration of historic buildings with experts in Palermo.
The Association of Local Councils and the director of the Department of Local Councils have been informed about the twinning agreement.
