New versions of the popular, sporty Alfa Romeo 156 were launched on the local market yesterday by UCIM Co. Ltd.
The launch was made at Hal Far, where 1987 Formula 3 Italy champion and 1997 GT world champion Enrico Bertaggia put the cars through their paces.
The new cars are the Alfra 156 2.0 JTS (Jet Thrust Stoichiometric) with the first direct injection petrol engine and a specific power greater than 60KW/I, and the Alfa 156 GTA with a new more powerful 3.2 litre engine.
Alfra Romeo local sales manager John Tabone said the JTS was a world first, featuring the forerunner of a power unit that would eventually equip all the brand's models.
He said the engine produced power greater than 82BHP per litre and torque of 100 Newtonmetre per litre. This guaranteed the performance of a 2.3 litre unit but used 10 per cent less fuel.
The new 2.0 JTS wll be joined by a 2.4 JTD turbodiesel with power increased from 138 to 150 BHP.
The cars have new safety measures and greater comfort, including an automatic bizone climate control system which allows the driver and passengers to control their desired different temperatures.
Other equipment includes a rain sensor, cruise control, multifunctional display and a trip computer.
Prospective Alfa Romeo customers will be able to admire the performance, safety and technology feature of the new 156 JTS or GTA in demonstrations by Mr Bertaggia today.
Customers who already own an Alfa Romeo will have the opportunity to try out the new cars on Sunday.
