A possible visit to Malta by King Juan Carlos of Spain in the near future was discussed yesterday by the newly-appointed Maltese ambassador to Spain Cecilia Attard-Pirotta, the King himself and Spanish foreign minister Ana de Palacio during an audience in Madrid.

The audience was held after Ms Attard-Pirotta presented her diplomatic credentials to the King in a ceremony at the Royal Palace.

They also discussed Malta's bid to join the European Union, the possibility of further cooperation between Malta and Spain in the economic and cultural sectors and the historic links between the two countries.
