Following the award of a tender for the construction of the Mgarr terminal building and its underlying car park, works are due to start tomorrow.
Works on the terminal building are envisaged to be completed in nine months, the Malta Maritime Authority said.
Works on this phase of the multi-million Cirkewwa Development Project will start with the construction of bored piles in the existing car park and marshalling area. The piles will form the foundations for the columns and beams, which will support the roof of the new car park. This will be followed by the construction of the terminal building itself. It will consist of a concrete structure above the underground car park level.
Given the small size of the marshalling areas at Mgarr harbour and the nature of the works involved, the harbour is being considered a construction site. For this reason, the public not making use of the ferry service is being asked to co-operate by not entering the harbour area unnecessarily, to avoid congestion.
