Smoking is calculated to have directly or indirectly caused the death of 228 persons between January and August this year, Health Minister Louis Deguara said in parliament yesterday. He said 159 of the victims were men and 69 women.

The actual causes of death were cancer of the lungs or the wind pipe, chronic diseases of the lungs and chronic heart disease including heart attacks.
