As a Chinese living in Malta, may I congratulate the Malta-China Friendship Society for making it possible for Malta to participate in the Tianjin International Arts Festival, which was held in China last month.

My sister, who lives in Beijing, has seen the Maltese dancers and performers on television. She told me that they all left a very good impression on the Chinese people. With all the foreign countries participating in this festival and with the Chinese talent taking part, it was not easy for a Maltese girl to acquire the second place in the international painting competition.

That Malta, from 27 countries, was one of only four foreign countries chosen by the festival organisers to take part in the closing ceremony of the festival speaks volumes about the talent existing in this small island. A young singer from Malta pleasantly surprised everyone. She was the only foreign singer who sang in Chinese.

I understand that the idea for this girl to sing in Chinese was floated by the president of the Malta-China Friendship Society, Reno Calleja. I know Mr Calleja personally and I know how dedicated he is to promote the friendship between Malta and my country.

Malta managed to get publicity on television and radio stations and in several Chinese national and provincial newspapers, as a result of this participation in the Tianjin International Festival.

Once again, congratulations for this success.
