A total of 36 fatal industrial accidents occurred in the five-year period to 2001, Social Policy Minister Lawrence Gonzi said in parliament yesterday.

There were 12 fatal accidents at workplaces in 1998, eight in 1999, six last year and five each in 2000 and 1997.

Answering a question by Labour MP Karl Chircop, Dr Gonzi said there were 5,111 industrial accidents last year, 5,286 in 2000 and 5,274 in 1999.
