Bank Of Valletta is to participate in this year's European Mobility Week this week. The initiative, supported by the European Commission's DG Environment, is being promoted in Malta by the Ministry for Home Affairs and the Environment and will seek to create awareness on the damage being caused by current mobility trends to the environment and to the quality of life in general.

Bank of Valletta will be encouraging branch managers and heads of department to make every effort to reduce the usage of cars by their staff members by more than 50 per cent during this particular week. To achieve this objective, branch managers and heads of department are being urged to organise shared transport.

On BoV's active participation in the European Mobility Week, John Soler, BoV's executive head administration, said: "The bank welcomed this initiative because it is well aware of the importance that the environment has in our everyday lives. Indeed, by supporting and participating in such initiatives, organisations can help set the pace towards a better lifestyle.

"These actions create an awareness of the benefits that can be reaped from sustainable means of transport and promote the introduction of policies which take better account of the citizens' needs in terms of air pollution, reduction of noise and quality of life. We encourage other local organisations and associations to participate in this unique event."

European Mobility Weeks follows the success of the European "In town without my car!" campaign initiated in France in 1998. This year, Public Transport, Cycling and Living Streets/Greenways have been chosen as common themes for the whole of Europe. The European Mobility Week will reach its climax with the now traditional car-free day on Sunday.
