President and Mrs de Marco yesterday visited the city of Limassol and Kolossi Castle.
The castle served as the base of activities of the Order of St John of Jerusalem from 1301 to 1306. It was then handed over to the Templars' Order until 1308, when the Hospitallers took back its possession. They remained at Kolossi till 1310 when the Order's base was transferred to Rhodes.
The Cypriot Minister of Finance and Mrs Takis Klerides then hosted the Presidential couple to a luncheon in their honour.
Later, the President visited Lefkara Village and met the mayor of Lefkara and Mrs Sophocles Sophocleous.
Today, Prof. de Marco will have a brief meeting with Cypriot President Glafcos Clerides, before leaving on a state visit to Greece.
Prof. de Marco is accompanied throughout his visit by Foreign Minister Joe Borg, Alfred Fiorini Lowell, Secretary to the Cabinet and Chancellor of the National Order of Merit, and Evarist Saliba, Ambassador of Malta to Greece.
The other members of the delegation are representatives of the Central Bank of Malta, the Malta Maritime Authority, the Chamber of Commerce, the Malta Federation of Industry, the Malta Centre for Restoration, Malta External Trade Corporation and the Malta Development Corporation.
