Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna said the prehistoric Mixta cave dwellings in Gozo had been under constant threat by nearby quarrying activity for over three decades.

The present quarry stands only a few meters away from the caves threatening their existence.

FWA believes that immediate action should be taken before it is too late by the new Superintendence of Heritage and the Malta Environment and Planning Authority to ensure that the remaining caves are not lost to greed and lack of initiative.

Any quarrying activity within their vicinity should be stopped while the caves themselves should be protected against vandalism, scientifically assessed and if possible managed and interpreted for the better appreciation of the public.
