Dr Carmel Cassar recently attended a meeting on European gender relations from a historical perspective, organised by the Social Studies and Anthropology Department at the National University of Maynooth in the Republic of Ireland.

Dr Cassar's paper was based on original research work recently published in the books entitled, Daughters of Eve, Women, Gender Roles, and the Impact of the Council of Trent in Catholic Malta (Mireva Publications 2002).

The topics discussed at Maynooth included patterns of marriage, honour, parenthood and work in European Catholic societies like Malta, Italy, Spain and Ireland between the 16th and 18th centuries.

Dr Cassar, a Cambridge-trained scholar and author of several books and papers in international journals, currently serves as senior lecturer in History at the Junior College.
