Four nights of sheer entertainment were experienced last weekend in which a multitude of F1 enthusiasts, not just the tifosi, waited anxiously for the drive of a lifetime. Racing an F1 simulator in an authentic Ferrari F2001 test car was possibly a dream but has been made a reality thanks to the efforts of Vodafone and Ferrari.

A tight schedule was set for the F1 simulator, moving all around Europe, but time was found to ship it to Malta for a passionate four nights, bringing this virtual experience to all. Nobody minded the wait with people young and old feasting their eyes not on one but four Ferrari F2001s one next to the other.

The set-up is unique. All participating 'drivers' race against each other on the Monza track in Italy utilising the latest F1 2002 console game slightly enhanced to give an authentic view of the up-coming track.

All present wanted to have a go. Most were just pleased to sit in the cockpit of an actual Formula 1 race car and experience the position, let alone the drive. Obviously, out of each group of four racers, one had to win an exclusive gift from Vodafone but the remaining three were all carrying smiles on their faces, having realised a possible dream.

For the many who had never seen a true F1 car, they were somewhat amazed by the size of the car and seeing more then one gives the size of events during an actual race.

Vodafone geared up for the event with gifts for all participants and even though the participants sided with the competition, they still appreciated the thrill and the exclusive Ferrari Vodafone sunshield, which was proudly carried away.

Timings from all participants were recorded and a special prize was given to the best time within the hour, making the event more exiting.

One thing that strikes you on seeing the set-up is its immaculate condition. It is difficult to believe that this has been moving around in Europe for the past eight months. The team that run the Vodafone Ferrari Test track are just incredible and work on the same lines like an F1 team with each member of the team having his set duties.

The F1 simulator can be up and running in less then an hour, with the finishing touches in polishing once more all that is red.

Over 750 participants took part in the event, all taking home exclusive Ferrari Vodafone merchandise. John Bundy made sure that all were in the rhythm while I kept all up to date, being given the opportunity of interpreting what it is that makes an F1 car an experience.

This thoroughbred experience ended with a close finish in which the best four girls and boys battled it out, with the winner spending the upcoming weekend in Monza to watch the Italian Grand Prix.

The closest win among the men was between the first and second with a mere 0.02 seconds, showing the intense competition that was created.

The massive response augured well for future plans for the Ferrari Vodafone F1 Test Track to revisit the islands. All at Vodafone were highly excited at the positive outcome and enthusiastic response.
