In reaction to the Gozo Local Plan published recently by MEPA, Xewkija council on Wednesday sent a letter with proposals to architect Frans Mallia.

The letter sent by the council points out that Xewkija council participated actively in the meetings on the Gozo Local Plan organised by MEPA. Following these meetings and others organised by the council, a list of proposals was drawn up.

The council asserts that MEPA failed to consult it on the section on industrial zones.

The letter states: "The Local Plan proposes to set up two Industrial Zones for industrial garages. The council objects to the setting up of industrial garages in Tal-Hamrija and Babisku Streets. There is a farm of historical value which dates back to the time of the Knights in that area."

The council opposes the demolishing of the farm to build an industrial zone ten metres away from a residential area. It suggests that instead the residential area should be extended.

The council said: "An Industrial Zone should be built in every village to accommodate small industries. The Industrial Zone in the Ta' Hamet area should be extended.

"The Gnien il-Haddiem in Vjal il-Labour is marked as an Industrial Zone in the local plan not as a Green Area in the 14.13-A plan. This needs to be corrected."

The council also has objections to land to be used for Aviation Facilities and as an Intensive Farming Zone.

Dr Justyne Caruana is acting for Xewkija council.
