Maltese households in 2000 had an average of 3.1 members, according to statistics issued by the National Statistics Office.
The NSO said the population (Maltese citizens only) then stood at 382,525 and the population density was 1,211 people per square kilometre.
Life expectancy for men stood at 74.9 years, and 79.8 years for women.
Infant mortality was 6.1 per 1000 live births.
The NSO said that total land area was 316 kilometres, of which 23.2 per cent is urban, 76.8 per cent non-urban.
A total 9.3 per cent of the non-urban land is irrigated while 78.8 per cent of the non-urban land is dry agricultural land.
There were 127,897 people in private dwellings and 29 per cent of the total water production was used by the domestic sector. A total 73 litres of water per head was estimated to have been used for domestic purposes.
