Vermont ice-cream maker Ben & Jerry's has opened its first shop in Malta, in St George's Bay.

Officially opened by US Ambassador Anthony Gioia on Wednesday, the shop forms part of the recently opened "Cafè Cruz", situated next to the Eden Century Cinemas and Eden Ice- Arena.

The Ben & Jerry's franchise operation in Malta is handled by Food Industries Ltd.

The company was founded in 1978 in a renovated gas station in Burlington, Vermont, US by childhood friends and dedicated hippies Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield.

The two friends started their ice-cream careers with a $5 ice- cream-making correspondence course from Penn State University.
