The Marsa Sports Club has taken over responsibility for the sports and country club in Marsa. The contract was signed yesterday between club representatives and the land department.
The Marsa sports ground was one of four government properties handed over to organisations which have now assumed responsibility to develop and manage the facilities.
Other contracts were signed with the Malta Amateur Athletics Association which was given space for offices near the Matthew Micallef St John Track; the Malta Playing Fields Association which was trusted with the Playing Field at Ta' Xbiex; and the Malta Young Sailors Club which was allocated a site at St Paul's Bay to be eventually developed as a clubhouse with slipway facilities.
Parliamentary secretary for youth and sport Jesmond Mugliett said similar contracts with other associations were expected to be signed in the coming weeks.
The contracts offer the facilities under a 49-year lease and establish conditions for their use. The Malta Sports Council will ensure that the conditions are observed.
The contracts had been approved through a resolution in parliament last June.
