Your leader "Where driving is an obstacle race" is typical of a Maltese person's reaction to change. What is wrong in San Gwann? Traffic proceeds in an orderly manner instead of having cars overtake on a road that curves all over the place like this road or cars being driven two abreast on a road meant for a single lane.

If a driver cannot see a centre strip, he is either driving too fast, shortsighted or driving with his eyes closed.

The road in San Gwann had a continuous white line painted down the centre, but cars still overtook, the driver not knowing what the line means, perhaps thinking that it is some decoration painted there to relieve the monotonous stretch of tarmac.

The problem is that some drivers are driving slowly usually with one arm hanging out of the window, admiring the view or chatting with the passenger, others are busy talking on their phones while driving slowly holding up traffic.

Driving well below the speed limit is an offence as it causes obstruction. Also, driving with only one hand on the steering wheel is unsafe; using your mobile while driving is both an offence and unsafe.

Let us stop criticising just for the fun of it, there is a lot more going on that needs attention, such as litter and bottles in the fields, roundabouts and banks lining all our major roads.

Finally we are getting rid of roads that were two-and-a-half lanes wide turning into two lanes for a few hundred metres then widening up to three-and-a-half lanes and back to two.

This was the situation on the Rabat Road. If you do not believe this, ask the relatives of people who were injured or died in traffic accidents because of this problem.
