Sue Abela and Melissa Anastasi are again producing a superb showing on the international tenpin bowling scene, this time at the Commonwealth Championships being held at the AMF Stirling bowling complex in Scotland.

Abela has won a bronze medal in the ladies' singles before teaming up with her younger sister Melissa Anastasi to clinch another bronze.

Teams of four (two men, two ladies) are contesting the championships from 15 commonwealth countries, including renowned bowling nations such as Australia, England and Malaysia.

The championships' events comprise men's and ladies' singles, men's and ladies' doubles, mixed doubles and also a four-bowler team event.

Malta's first success came courtesy of Abela who claimed the bronze medal in the ladies' singles behind England's Donna Adams (gold) and Natalie Shelley from Australia (silver).

Abela played to a fine 199.5 average throughout her six games to place third, including a high game of 221.

The doubles event followed, as did another bronze for the Maltese ladies' team made up of Abela along with Anastasi.

Both athletes performed extremely well on the very difficult lane conditions, (Abela 198.8 average, Anastasi 186), finishing their six-game session behind the Australian pair (gold) and England (silver).

The male bowlers representing Malta are Dennis Mercieca (11th in men's singles) and Leli Baldacchino (28th). Together, Mercieca and Baldacchino placed 12th in the men's doubles event.

The championships continue until Saturday with the Maltese clan hoping for more success in the mixed doubles and team events.
