I refer to the letter of August 9 by Maureen German, to draw her attention to the fact that Sliema celebrates the feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and not the feast of the Sacred Heart, which is completely different.

It was a decision taken by the president of the band club and his committee, together with the feast committee led by the father guardian, who decided to reduce the aerial fireworks display.

As the president of the band club said during a closing speech on television, since our area comprises mainly the older generation, we have shown a great deal of responsibility on our part by the reduction of fireworks.

The fireworks display was usually set off from Manoel Island, never from barges - I think that Ms German is long overdue for a visit to our feast!

The debris which fell was due to the aerial display, and this comprised pieces of burnt cartons and not wood! This is all part of the festa and we do not think that for a minor thing such as a piece of burnt carton we should do away with a part of our heritage and culture!

In fact, only two such kaxxa aerial fireworks display were set off from the jetty. Although there was a marked lack of kaxxi nfernali this year, there was a great attendance of locals and foreigners alike.

The success of the feast lies in the participation of the people.
