Students at the Institute of Art and Design in Targa Gap have been involved in a number of successful projects since last year, including building miniature boats powered by alternative energy sources.

First year TAS Students participated in the open category of the Farsons 50th Anniversary Competition and won the top joint prize in this category.

Matthew Farrugia was entrusted with the design of the prospectus cover for post-secondary courses of the education division. Matthew was closely monitored and assisted by his graphics tutor, Stephen Vella.

Farsons entrusted the institute with the interior decor of its canteen and Alfred Camilleri, design tutor, guided a group of students in producing a set of murals which were fixed at the end of July.

In the new scholastic year, students shall be working on a safety awareness campaign for Farsons Group.

Alessandro Caselli, a fourth-year student, designed and produced the MCAST prospectus as his final thesis project closely monitored by Patrick Galea, deputy director of the institute.

High-quality in-house standards were achieved by students in graphics design.

All first-year students were given a guided tour and lecture at the new Mater-Dei Hospital project over two days, as an introduction to an interior design project to materialise next scholastic year, on the initiative of Donald Friggieri, director of institute.

An alternative-energy project, under the guidance of the Patrick Galea and Mark Theuma, came to a successful end when projects were tested at Ghadira Bay recently with a sizeable crowd of students, staff and onlookers cheering each boat as it was set off.

Students used manually compressed air, steam, gun-powder, wind, rubber-band power and solar-energy to propel their boats.
