Drums, white goods removed from rubble walls

A total of 1,197 steel drums and white goods have been removed from rubble walls so far by employees of the manufacturing and services department and from the Parks and Landscape Conservation Section, both of the ministry for resources and infrastructure.

A spokesman for the environment ministry said that since the exercise started on June 27, the departments had removed oil drums and white goods from Zabbar, Kalkara, Zebbug, Siggiewi, Marsascala and Dingli.

He said that 710 drums and 33 white goods were removed from Zabbar, 187 drums were removed from Siggiewi, 133 drums from Zebbug, 85 from Dingli, 29 drums and a tank from Kalkara and 19 from Marsascala.

The ministry of infrastructure is currently shouldering the cost of the removal of the drums but a legal notice enabled the government to remove steel drums and other objects at the owner's expense within six weeks of issue.

The removal of drums continues in Dingli today and moves on to Mgarr next week.
