The Malta University Junior College has just published the fifth edition of Look... Before you leap, a profile of subjects offered for the Matriculation Certificate Examination at Advanced and Intermediate Levels. This column will be reproducing extracts from this excellent publication. The following is some information on the Mathematics Department:

Mathematics is a problem-posing and problem-solving activity. It consists of a dynamic and expanding body of knowledge, and is a fundamental tool for scientific, technological, economical and social development. The mathematical courses offered within the mathematics department are designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop positive attitudes and confidence in mathematics and its applications.

The Department strives so that our students may acquire a sound base of knowledge, skills and attitudes that are required for further studies in mathematics, other academic areas, and future careers. They are encouraged to see mathematics as an effective means of communication. Moreover, the mathematics courses aim to help students develop an understanding of coherence and progression in mathematics and of how different areas of mathematics can be connected.

Currently, the department offers Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (Mechanics), both at Advanced and Intermediate levels. Pure Mathematics consists mainly of methods and problem-solving techniques covering basic areas of study that are of fundamental importance for university bound students, especially those taking science-related degrees.

On the other hand, Applied Mathematics (Mechanics), which is based on Newton's laws of motion, is the application of mathematics to the physical world.
