According to the National Office of Statistics, Gozo's per capita GDP is only 71 per cent that of Malta. We are told that Gozo would be classified as a NUT 3 region by the EU if Malta joined. Thus, Gozo would be treated as a separate region for statistical purposes.

Such eventual statistical revelations could indeed be illuminating! For example, I wonder whether the per capita income tax paid by Gozitans, as well as the ratio of government income from VAT, is anywhere near 71 per cent of the average for Malta.

Separate statistics for Malta and Gozo are eagerly awaited. Gozitans may well find that NUT 3 has a boomerang effect!
