The sum of Lm57,800 has been collected in the first 36 hours of the Malta Volleyball Marathon, which has already received 11,500 visitors since it kicked off on Monday at 11 p.m.
The 17th edition of the marathon, organised by the Kerygma Movement, yesterday entered its second day and everything was running smoothly, according to the organisers.
The marathon, which started amid enthusiasm and excitement, is intended to continue for 240 hours - 18 more than last year.
The weather was also on the side of the players, who are in an "excellent" condition. During the first two days of the marathon, temperatures never surpassed 29°C. However, they had to withstand the wind during the first few hours.
Assisted by coaches and a medical team, they are following a rigorous roster as regards food and sleep.
Among the highlights, football player Alessandro Del Piero's authentic and autographed T-shirt was presented by Juventus Club Malta president Mark Zammit to the Kerygma Movement to be auctioned during the marathon.
Acting President George Hyzler attended the event yesterday in the absence of President Guido de Marco, who is on holiday.
The marathon, being held at the Trade Fair Grounds in Naxxar, is in aid of Dar tal-Providenza and the Dominican Mission in Albania.
The Kerygma Movement has appealed to the public to attend the event during the day and at night, to lend moral support to the players.
