The Malta Chess Federation held the August edition of their first Sunday Rapid event at the Corinthia Palace Hotel, Attard last weekend.

The venue enticed over 30 players of all ages and chess categories to participate.

In these events, players are allowed only 15 minutes each to finish the whole chess game. Five matches are held in one morning session, using the swiss pairings system.

Leading the field was G.D. Borg, Malta's highest honoured international chess player. There were also players from several educational entities like the Liceo Vassalli, De La Salle, St Michael's and St Elias schools. A considerable number of players who are participating in the current Grand Hotels Summer Chess Tournament also turned up for last Sunday's event.

The eventual winner was Dr Andrew Borg of Manchester Hospital who happened to be spending a holiday in Malta. Dr Borg is the holder of an international silver medal won in the 1980 Malta Olympiad. He practises chess regularly in the UK.

The event was sponsored by the Corinthia Activities and Sports Club. The next Rapid will be held on Sunday, September 8.
