A scheme to collect plastic bags and avoid their ending up as waste is picking up momentum, with more and more bags being brought to the Aw Tribu Tip Top shops by customers.

One cent is being paid by the outlets in Fgura, Bay Street and Surfers on Ghadira beach for any two clean plastic bags which can be re-used.

"Plastic is a major pollutant and hundreds of millions of plastic bags reach our waste dumps every year. When burned, these bags generate toxic fumes that are dangerous to health," Aw Tribu Tip Top said.

Customers are asked to pack the plastic bags in bundles of 10.
