Mobility programmes have become more popular so much so that in October the 30 countries participating in the Socrates Programme will be celebrating the millionth Erasmus participant.

Erasmus is the Action within Socrates that focuses on higher education, with student mobility being the most popular activity. Consequently, the European Commission, in conjunction with the National Agencies in every participant country, will be organising a large event in Brussels to celebrate this success. Parallel celebrations will also be organised on a national level by each of the 30 countries involved, including Malta.

In the meantime, preparations for the new academic year are currently under way at the Socrates office at the University, as the third year of mobility is approaching. It is planned that throughout this year, the University of Malta will welcome 300 foreign students who have applied to participate in exchange programmes, while a similar number of Maltese students will benefit likewise.

There are various placements available to Maltese students, among them in the Netherlands. Erasmus placements in the Netherlands for Maltese students in the forthcoming year are: Faculty of Arts: University of Amsterdam, Utrecht University and Erasmus University; Faculty of Education: Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen and Hogeschool Drenthe; Institute of Health Care: Hogeschool Haarlem/MBRT and FONTYS, University of Prof. Ed, Eindhoven; and Psychology: Katholieke Universiteit Brabant, Tilburg University.

Similar placements are available for each member state on Website: http://home.um.edu.mt/socrates/
