The sand dune at White Tower Bay, in Mellieha, the last remaining dune in Malta, is in danger, Nature Trust (Malta) said.

Several boats were parked on the upper reaches of the dune beneath the Tamarisk trees and a skip was placed right in the middle of the dune, it said.

In addition, several campers had flattened a great portion of the dune, which was regularly criss-crossed by offroad vehicles, the environmental NGO said in a statement.

"The dune is currently blossoming with white pancratium flowers, which are being literally smothered with human activity.

"Nature Trust, in conjunction with MEPA, is working strenuously to safeguard the dune and, for this reason, appeals to the public to respect the dune's integrity by avoiding detrimental effects, such as trampling, camping and dumping."
